The Hot91.9FM Radio Training Academy

At Hot 91.9fm we believe that success isn’t just about what you accomplish in your own life but what you inspire others to do in theirs. The Hot 91.9fm team and their partners have an immense amount of talent from all different areas within radio and added together these individual expertise is a powerful gift that deserves to be shared.

The first Hot 91.9fm Radio Training Academy course was held in 2015. Since it’s inception, the academy has welcomed over 125 students. During the first year talent was identified in a few students, three of whom went on to other stations and two who have now become part time presenters on Hot 91.9fm, namely Ryan Flynn and Adrian Naidoo. The 2017 course opened the door for Bunny Majaja who was quickly recognised for her wonderful humour and on air ability. After 10 months of the training, Bunny had proven she was ready for her debut and was given a week day contract with Hot 91.9fm.

The course is open to the public and is free of charge to anyone who has the passion for the radio broadcasting industry and the dedication to complete the course. The course comprises of 12 weeks of theory sessions which are held on Saturday mornings, followed by 5 practical sessions.

The history and evolution of radio and its position in a listener’s daily life.
Finding your voice
Radio has personality and that’s what make it a unique and extraordinarily powerful medium. Finding your voice in a landscape of personalities is step one.
Technical - Radio 101 How Does FM & AM work?
Technical overview of how the magic of radio is fashioned from frequencies and waves.
The business of radio
Discusses the merits of the business of radio in the digital age. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this medium in revenue creation.
Balance: Sales vs Programming
Content is king, but revenue is the queen looking to usurp her monarch. Finding the balance between the two is the key stone of any successful station.
Voice Over Artist Techniques & Copywriting
The embodiment of theatre of the mind, techniques to thrill, enthrall and enrapture. Making scripted content come to life as well as understanding the fundamentals of copywriting for radio.

The second leg of the Hot91.9FM Radio Training Academy is another 3 months bringing the practical aspect of radio to life with 4 phases of hands-on training.
Phase 1
Preparing the yourself physically for on-air. This phase covers the basics of getting to know the studio

  • Vocal exercises
  • Understanding the mic
  • Hitting the ramp (intros and outros)
  • Understanding the mixer
  • Having suitable equipment (appropriate headphones)
Phase 2
From concept to creation. The rigors of copywriting, recording and production. Understanding:

  • Scripting and copywriting to brief
  • Recording and delivery
  • Producing promos
  • Production Training
Phase 3
Designing clocks and familiarizing yourself with show prep.
