Sam Cowen is crossing continents for Mandela Day and Hot Cares.
On the 18th of July, HOT 91.9FM’s Mansfield in the Morning Co-Host Sam Cowen will be flying out of South Africa, to Turkey to swim 6,5km from Asia to Europe in the Bosphorus Cross-Continental Swimming Race.
One day a year in July, the Bosphorus – one of the busiest shipping channels in Europe, is shut down for this magnificent open water swimming event between the continents Europe and Asia, held annually at Bosphorus, Istanbul, Turkey.
Sam is not doing this 6.5 km swimming race for nothing. She is doing it with purpose, to raise R67 000.00 for Mandela month. This money will go into the Hot 91.9FM Hot Cares bank account, to be used for projects Hot 91.9FM and Hot Cares support, including a soup kitchen and a creche.
Sam entered in December last year, never dreaming she would make the cut of 2400 swimmers worldwide. Since earning her place in this race, she has been training as hard and as much as possible in this cold winter, to be prepared enough to finish the 6.5km race within the 2 hour time limit. Sam says that it’s been the scariest and most exciting of times and, according to her children, she has been the most boring their mommy has been for a long time.
Sam says; “I’ve trained as hard as possible and I hope it’s enough to get me across on the day. But more than that, I hope we can raise enough money to keep feeding hungry mouths, especially in such cold winter months. Raising that would be success enough for me.”

About Hot Cares
Hot Cares is the Hot 91.9fm community upliftment initiative that strives towards making a meaningful difference in the lives of those around us. Since 2015, Hot 91.9fm has provided much-needed assistance to those in need within our community. Beneficiaries have ranged from the development of crèche’s in informal settlements, previously disadvantaged entrepreneurs, NPO’s needing guidance, resources and awareness of their programs, medical assistance, educational bursaries and individual assistance to those who need little bit of hope and a helping hand at a particularly difficult time in their life.
It is from Hot 91.9fm together with the income received from the pledges at our annual Teddython, the weekly Hot Cares auctions and other donations, that Hot Cares is able to make a sustainable difference.
The spirit of Ubuntu, is imbued with the sentiment, “I Am, because We Are” and Hot Cares truly believe that together we can reach our goal of making a difference in as many lives as possible.
In a world filled with continued economic challenges, environmental concerns and declining living stands, Hot Cares receives requests for assistance on a daily basis.
