The perfect destination for a much needed family getaway - Hot 91.9

Marc Hummel contacted the Hot 91.9FM Christmas Wish with a humble request on behalf of his mother Edith and sister Kerryn. Over the past 20 months, the Hummel family has endured tremendous emotional and financial strife, beginning with the loss of their family patriarch on 27 August 2018. Passing at the age of 71 after fighting 7 years of renal failure and 2 months of illness following a heart attack, his death has left a significant emotional and financial void in the lives of the Hummel’s.

Marc recounts the financial issues his folks have encountered over the years including three bankruptcies. Marc also shared the tough journey his sister has had as a divorcee with 3 teenage boys and her ex-husband who decided out-of-the-blue to discontinue maintenance payment.

At the same time as he stopped paying maintenance, Kerryn was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis, a long-term neuromuscular disease that leads to varying degrees of skeletal muscle weakness. As a single mum and on a teacher’s salary, it’s been hard for Kerryn to keep afloat and keep her boys happy and healthy whilst being in and out of hospital with the myriad of testing she’s had to undergo. Their brother Brett flew in from Durban for a few days to try and help her kids with lifts, school-work etc.

In April this year, tragedy struck again with the sudden passing of their brother Brett in Durban. Brett was off to his local Pick n Pay in Musgrave and suffered a heart attack, and never made it home. Marc says: “As strong a person as my mom is, this has truly devastated her, and the fact that she socializes, plays scrabble daily, goes for walks and exercises, is testament to her character. She is always there for us and her grandchildren, but I cannot begin to imagine what she goes through each day and the loneliness that overcomes her all the time. I try to help my mom and my sister in any way that I can, but I am not in a position to help much financially. As I say the financial pressure my mom and my sister are under, together with this emotional hardship is so hard for me to see.”

All Marc has asked for is an opportunity for Kerryn and Edith to have a little time away. To recoup and regroup. He says: “They both need a break so desperately, to clear their heads, cry together, laugh together and be taken care of, and I would so appreciate it if you could help.”

Compliments of Thornybush, Hot Cares has arranged a two-night stay for four people sharing in two rooms at either Saseka Tented Camp or Thornybush Game Lodge, situated in the Thornybush Nature Reserve, inclusive of: all meals and accommodation, selected hot and cold beverages and snacks, as well as early morning and late afternoon game drives and optional bush walks.

And as a special Christmas Wish surprise, we’ve organized for Marc and his family to join them so that the entire family can get some much-needed emotional R&R ahead of their first festive season without their father and brother (and for Edith, husband and son).
